A supernatural mystery set in 1908 Manchuria will take center stage when bestselling author Yangsze Choo appears at the Pasadena Festival of Women Authors next spring.
The festival, scheduled for March 22, 2025, at the Pasadena Hilton, will feature Choo discussing her latest work “The Fox Wife,” which Time Magazine named a Best Book of February.
The novel follows Snow, a mysterious protagonist whose true nature – human or mythical fox – remains unclear as she pursues vengeance for her child’s death in early 20th century Asia.
“Some people think foxes are similar to ghosts because we go around collecting ‘qi,’ but nothing could be further than the truth,” reads the novel’s opening passage, setting up its exploration of supernatural themes.
The Washington Post praised the work’s deeper resonance: “Like all the best supernatural stories, ‘The Fox Wife’ reveals something profound about humanity.”
Choo, a fourth-generation Malaysian of Chinese descent now living in California, previously authored “The Ghost Bride,” which became a Netflix series, and “The Night Tiger,” a New York Times bestseller.
The daylong program runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring author readings, book signings, and breakout discussion groups, with lunch served at noon.
The Pasadena Festival of Women Authors, founded in 2009 by Susan Long and Elsie Sadler, evolved from its origins at the Pasadena Senior Center to become the flagship event of the Pasadena Literary Alliance, established as a nonprofit organization in 2016.
The Alliance’s mission focuses on recognizing authors’ accomplishments, advancing community dialogue about literary arts, and raising funds for nonprofit literary programs.
Recent beneficiaries include Pasadena City College’s Writers in Residence program, Pasadena Senior Center’s Learning Series, the Public Library’s One City One Story initiative, PEN America’s Emerging Voices Fellowship, and WriteGirl’s student seminars.
Attendees will receive table assignments and breakout session tickets upon arrival, with special accommodations available for vegetarian meal requests and book purchasing opportunities throughout the event.
