The Pasadena Audubon Society and the Gamble House host a bird walk and a separate bird sit with Councilmember Tyron Hampton, both starting at 8 a.m. at the Gamble House Bookstore, 4 Westmoreland Place. Jodhan Fine, the society’s community engagement liaison, leads the walk with a Spanish-language translator through the neighborhood around the Gamble House. The route is a 1-mile moderate loop with dirt paths into the Arroyo, and its paths and unpaved areas are not accessible under the Americans with Disabilities Act, organizers said. The bird sit takes place on the house’s rear lawn, under the big oak. Both are free.
The Walktober Storytime and StoryWalk Kickoff runs from 11 a.m. to noon at Sunnyslope Park on North Sunnyslope Avenue. Hastings Branch Library and Day One lead a storytime on the move, reading Linda Williams’ “The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything,” followed by Halloween crafts and games. The StoryWalk stays in the park through the end of October for self-guided walks.
Saturday also falls inside Week Without Driving, an observance from 6 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, through 11 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8.
Pasadena Village’s “¡Vamos a caminar!” walk, set for 3:30 p.m. Saturday from Mijares Mexican Restaurant, has been canceled because of anticipated heat, Walktober organizers said.
The city is sponsoring Walktober events this year, the ninth in Pasadena, according to Walktober organizers. The Department of Transportation organizes the month with Day One and the Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition.
