The Pasadena African American Film Foundation’s 3rd Annual Black August Film Festival is set to return on Aug. 17-18, 2024, at the Flintridge Center 236 West Mountain Street. The event has seen significant growth since its inception, doubling attendance between its first and second years.
This year’s lineup includes films addressing a range of social issues, from colorism to the debate over the right to braid hair without a cosmetology license in two states. The festival continues to attract high-quality submissions and increased attention from distributors.
A highlight of the festival will be the premiere of Pasadena African American Film Foundation’s inaugural Pasadena Sports Legends documentary, “Walter Butler: The Jet,” celebrating the life of the renowned Pasadena athlete and mentor. Butler, a former record holder at Pasadena High School and state champion at Pasadena City College, and is said to have operated a sporting goods store in the city for over three decades.
The festival has expanded its global reach, featuring films from 13 countries including Australia, India, Brazil, Colombia, Iran, and various African nations. New additions this year include works from Switzerland, Bulgaria, and Italy, showcasing a diverse array of human-interest stories.
Last year’s Best Featured Documentary, “26.2 to Life,” was acquired by ESPN Films and premiered earlier this year, demonstrating the festival’s growing influence in the film industry. The event continues to attract high-quality submissions and increased attention from distributors.
