Black Image Center, a Los Angeles-based collective nonprofit 501c3, will host an “Instant Portrait Activation” at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena on Saturday, Aug. 17. The event marks the final day of the exhibition “Things Well Worth Waiting For,” featuring works by photographer Kwame Brathwaite.
From 2 to 4 p.m., attendees will participate in a portrait activation using instant cameras. Inspired by Brathwaite’s iconic style, participants can take their photos home or contribute to a “community quilt” assembled in honor of Brathwaite’s work.
Founded by young Black photographers, Black Image Center aims to cultivate imagination through photography and economically empower Black storytellers and image makers. The organization provides resources and networking opportunities both online and offline.
The event, sponsored by Rhymshot, is part of a larger exhibition supported by grants from the Pasadena Art Alliance. Additional support comes from ArtCenter’s Center for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Photography and Imaging department, and a grant from the Pasadena Art Alliance.
The Williamson Gallery at ArtCenter’s Hillside Campus, located at 1700 Lida Street in Pasadena, will host the event beginning at 2 p.m. Parking is available in the South Parking lot, with the entrance on Lida Street.
Regular gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. Presented in cooperation with the Kwame Brathwaite Archive, this event offers a unique opportunity for community engagement and celebration of Black artistry.
