The movie business continues to roar back to life, as “Black Widow” opened with $80 million this weekend to break the pandemic-era box office record set just two weeks ago by “F9,” according to industry estimates released Sunday.
Disney’s Marvel superhero movie starring Scarlett Johansson did about eight times the business of the latest entry in the testosterone-fueled “Fast & Furious” franchise, which took in $10.8 million Friday through Sunday in the United States and Canada, Comscore reported.
“The Boss Baby 2: Family Business” was third with $9.7 million in its second week in theaters, followed by “The Forever Purge” with $6.7 million and “A Quiet Place Part II” with $3 million.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “Cruella” ($2.2 million), “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” ($1.6 million), “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway” ($1.25 million), “In the Heights” ($630,000) and “Zola” ($620,000).
This was the biggest weekend at the box office since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, with moviegoers spending an estimated $117 million at theaters in North America, according to Comscore. The industry tracking group noted that 81% of theaters in North America are currently open.
