Bonsai Master to Lead Workshop at Vroman’s Bookstore

Decades of global expertise brings ancient Japanese art to Pasadena's educational series
Published on Nov 16, 2024

A renowned bonsai expert with four decades of experience in Australia, the UK and the U.S. will guide participants through creating their own Japanese gardens at Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena this month.

Daniel Deephouse, who volunteers maintaining bonsai collections at both The Huntington Gardens and Lake Balboa Japanese Garden, will lead the hands-on workshop on Thursday, Nov. 21 from 6 to 8 p.m.

During the workshop, originally scheduled for Nov. 7, Vroman’s Ed, the bookstore’s recreational workshop series, will provide all necessary supplies for participants to repot, trim and wire their own Juniper Nana bonsai specimens.

Deephouse’s journey into bonsai began at age eight when his Oma (grandmother), Elizabeth Deephouse, introduced him to the art form, according to Deephouse Landscaping’s website. Deephouse Landscaping is his business in Los Angeles.

“Plants are my Passion. Born in Perth, Western Australia, I have had a love for plants since I was a little boy,” the company website says about Deephouse.

The Australian-born expert currently volunteers at prestigious gardens while tending to private collections and styling trees throughout the Los Angeles area, alongside operating his comprehensive landscaping business.

The workshop will take place in Vroman’s Meeting Room, located in the Atrium at 709 E. Colorado Blvd. Suite 120.
