Boston Court Pasadena to Premiere ‘A Going Away Party Play’ on Thursday

New production explores Iranian-American identity and the impact of revolution
Published on Sep 18, 2024

Boston Court Pasadena is set to debut “A Going Away Party Play,” a world premiere production by Keyanna Khatiblou, on Thursday, Sept. 19. The play, directed by James Fowler, delves into themes of multicultural identity and the experience of leaving one’s home country.

The production centers on the central character, Mina, who throws a party for close friends and the audience. Throughout the evening, attendees engage in games and discussions about the current American socio-political landscape.

Mina’s story intertwines with that of her parents, who fell in love while fleeing the Iranian Revolution. This narrative thread explores the complexities of maintaining relationships amid political turmoil.

The cast features Mehrnaz Mohammadi as Mina/Niloofar, Kodi Jackman as Kate/Caroline, Nathan Mohebbi as Ryan/Basir, Giovanny Camarena as Mateo/Security Officer, and Cindy Nguyen as Debbie/Maman Bozorg. Understudies include Shereen Khatibloo, Sandra Kate Burck, Amir Kamali, Evan Lugo, and Quyen Ngo.

Khatiblou, an Arizona-raised, Chicago-based writer, draws from her experiences to craft this exploration of multicultural identities. Her previous works have been developed and produced in Chicago and New York.

Fowler, recently named Co-Artistic Director of Open Fist Theatre Company, brings over a decade of directorial experience to the production. His recent adaptation of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” received critical acclaim.

The play’s creative team includes Stephen Gifford for scenic design, Mylette Nora for costume design, John Nobori for sound design, Gavan Wyrick for lighting design, and Cindy Campos for properties design. Camella Coopilton serves as Production Stage Manager, with cultural consultant Mehdi Faraji, Ph.D., and dialect coach Keri Safran contributing to the production’s authenticity.

Thursday’s show will be an exclusive first look for the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce. The event includes a reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by the play at 8 p.m.
