The 1961 drama follows Reverend T. Lawrence Shannon, a defrocked minister leading tours through Mexico while teetering on the edge of a nervous breakdown.
“This rarely staged gem is a haunting, humorous, and deeply human story about people clinging to faith, desire, and dignity at the edge of collapse,” according to Boston Court’s promotional materials.
Director Jessica Kubzansky, who serves as Boston Court’s artistic director, leads the production featuring Riley Shanahan as Shannon. The cast includes Julanne Chidi Hill as Maxine Faulk, Jully Lee as Hannah Jelkes, Dennis Dun as Nonno, and Ann Noble as Miss Fellowes and Frau Fahrenkopf.
Set over one turbulent night at the Costa Verde Hotel on the brink of world war, the play explores Shannon’s struggle with his lost connection to God as two women offer different paths to redemption—one through sensuality, the other through spirituality.
The production features scenic design by Tesshi Nakagawa, costumes by Denitsa Bliznakova, lighting by Kaitlin Trimble, and sound design by John Zalewski.
