Forget expensive irrigation systems and chemical fertilizers. A workshop in Pasadena on Saturday, August 16 promises to teach participants how to transform their gardens using nothing more than logs, branches and kitchen scraps.
The Carbon Culture Workshop will guide participants through hands-on construction of Hugelkultur berms and “lasagna-style” mulching—sustainable practices that optimize water resources and build living soil using decomposing organic matter.
Sponsored by Poly/Ana, the five-hour workshop runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., with check-in at 8 a.m. and instruction beginning at 8:15 a.m.
Participants will learn to construct Hugelkultur berms using logs, branches and compostable materials—a technique that creates self-watering garden beds as buried wood slowly decomposes. The workshop also teaches layering mulch “lasagna-style” to suppress weeds, increase water-holding capacity and support soil healing.
Two pricing options are available: a $40 day-of workshop that includes lunch, or a comprehensive $250 Hugelist Certification Program featuring pre-workshop Zoom sessions and post-workshop integration support.
The exact location in Pasadena will be shared three days before the event via email and the Poly/Ana newsletter.
Attendees should bring sun protection, sturdy shoes, gardening gloves, a reusable water bottle and a notebook. Poly/Ana provides water, coffee, snacks, lunch and shade.
Full refunds are available up to four days before the event, but tickets become nonrefundable after August 12, though they remain transferable.
