Goat Yoga returns to the rear lawn of The Gamble House on Saturday, July 25, with two sessions at 5:00 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. — a shift into the evening after spring classes met at 9:00 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. The Gamble House Conservancy operates the landmark, which is owned by the City of Pasadena, and says the series is now in its sixth season. The sessions take place on the fourth Saturday of each month through October.
The one-hour sessions are led by certified yoga instructor and Gamble House docent Tina Lenert. The goats — Nigerian Dwarf kids brought by Hello Critter — wander the lawn during class; the Pasadena Weekly described them as rescued. Each session sets aside 15 minutes of petting and photographs before and after a 30-minute class.
The series began during the COVID-19 pandemic and has since returned annually because of popular demand, the Pasadena Weekly reported. “We launched it as a way for people to be on site safely,” Scott said. Sheryl Scott, the Conservancy’s director of communications and operations, said this marks its sixth season.
The class doubles as a kind of house tour. “She gives people yoga instruction while the goats are there with them,” Scott said. “She also talks about The Gamble House, so people get information about the house as well.”
The home was built in 1908 for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter & Gamble Company and designed by architects Charles and Henry Greene. It is a National Historic Landmark, and its facade appeared as the mansion in “Back to the Future.” Scott called it “one of the finest examples of American Arts and Crafts architecture in the U.S.” The Conservancy has widened its public calendar in recent seasons. “We have really increased our public programming to welcome the public in,” Scott said. According to the Gamble House and Hello Critter event listings, sessions cost $35 for members and $45 for non-members and run rain or shine. Participants should bring a yoga mat or full-sized towel; sanitized mats can be rented for $5 each. The listings ask attendees to wear a shirt that protects the back, remove loose jewelry and leave pets at home. The goats, for their part, keep their own schedule. They jump on, rebound off, trot under and crawl through the poses — treating the whole class, as the Gamble House puts it, like a playground.
