Pasadena residents will have an opportunity to learn more about fire-resilient landscaping solutions this weekend as part of an ongoing educational series focused on California’s ecology. The Hahamongna Native Plant Nursery, operated by the Arroyo Seco Foundation, will host a free presentation titled “Whole System Gardens and Firewise Plants” on Saturday, April 19, at 10 a.m.
The presentation will feature the relationship of California native plants to fire, and the types of native plants that are resilient to fire, according to organizers.
Speakers Shawn Maestretti and Leigh Adams will lead the 90-minute session, which is part of a year-long series co-sponsored by Pasadena Water and Power (PWP) and the Arroyo Seco Foundation (ASF).
Each event in the series is open to the public and features presentations about different aspects of California’s ecology and restoration using nature-based solutions. The program starts at 10 a.m. and concludes around 11:30 a.m.
The event is free, registration is not required, and light refreshments will be offered.
Attendees can explore the nursery through guided tours offered by volunteers before the presentation at 9:30 a.m. and afterward at noon.
California native plants will be available for purchase before and after the event, giving participants immediate access to fire-resistant landscaping options.
The presentation will take place outdoors at the Hahamongna Native Plant Nursery, which is tucked away in a corner of the Hahamongna Watershed Park, in northwest Pasadena near the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, at 4550 Oak Grove Drive on Pasadena’s extreme western edge.

The Hahamongna Native Plant Nursery is managed and operated by Arroyo Seco Foundation, a century-old nonprofit based in Pasadena, and is staffed entirely by volunteers.
