The statewide survey invites residents to select their top parks across 12 categories, up from 10 last year. The 2026 poll adds two new categories: “Best State Park for Water Activities” and “Best State Park for Hidden Gem Experiences.” Other categories include best parks for camping, hiking, birdwatching, family-friendly adventures, wildflowers, spectacular views, and picnicking, according to the foundation’s press release.
“The ‘Best of California’s State Parks’ poll is a fun opportunity for Californians to share what they love about their state parks,” said Rachel Norton, the foundation’s executive director. “With 280 state park units, there are so many different types of parks to explore in California, whether you’re looking for a day at the beach, a hike among the redwoods, or a chance to learn about history.”
The nomination period runs through February 28. The foundation will compile the most-nominated parks into an official ballot, with voting opening March 11. Winners—one per category plus two honorable mentions—will be announced in May.
The inaugural poll in 2025 drew more than 1,300 participants, many of whom submitted photos, personal stories, and memories about why certain parks are special, according to the foundation. Last year’s winners included Morro Bay State Park in San Luis Obispo County for camping, Mount Tamalpais State Park in Marin County for hiking, Crystal Cove State Park in Orange County for best beach, and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park for wildflowers.
California’s state park system includes 280 units, more than 340 miles of coastline, 15,000 campsites, and 5,200 miles of trails. The parks span redwood forests, desert landscapes, historic sites, and coastal escapes.
Nominations can be submitted at calparks.org/bestof2026. Participants can nominate parks in as many categories as they wish and may include a short note explaining their choice or upload a photo.
“Nominating your favorite state park could spark someone else’s next adventure,” Norton said.
