The afternoon opens at 2:30 p.m. with a pre-concert talk by Beverly Stein, professor at Cal State LA, before the concert itself begins at 3 p.m. The program reflects the breadth of Caltech’s chamber music tradition — a program built under the direction of violinist Maia Jasper White, pianist Robert Ward and woodwind specialist Hyesung Choe Park, who shepherd small ensembles of student musicians through repertoire that spans the Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras in a single afternoon.
Dabney Lounge sits in the heart of Caltech’s south campus, a wood-paneled room with the kind of acoustics that flatter intimate ensemble work. The lineup of student performers shifts from concert to concert as ensembles rotate through the season, but the format stays constant: tightly rehearsed chamber pieces, a generous mix of composers, and a reception that lets audience members talk with the players afterward.
The concert is part of Caltech’s free, open-to-the-public performing arts calendar, which has hosted student musicians in this format for decades. No tickets are required, but seating in Dabney Lounge is limited.
