Caltech Tai Chi Club Welcomes Beginners to Free Weekly Sessions

A rare opportunity to learn Hao-style tai chi chuan in a helpful, no-pressure environment
Published on Dec 18, 2025

The Caltech Tai Chi Club offers instruction in Hao-style tai chi chuan, a martial arts form characterized by small frame, subtle movements, and emphasis on internal energy cultivation. Meetings are held Mondays and Fridays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Hameetman Center’s Multipurpose Room on the second floor.

The club is free to join. There is no membership charge, and instruction is open to everyone in the Caltech community. Beginners are always welcome in a “helpful and no pressure environment.” In addition to Hao-style tai chi, the club practices Yang-style tai chi, kung fu, and other bare-hand and weapon forms.

Shang-Lin Chen, the club’s primary contact, advisor, and webmaster, first encountered tai chi chuan in a Caltech PE class in 1999 and officially joined the club in 2003. He has practiced Hao-style tai chi since then and now volunteers as advisor and webmaster for the organization.

The officially recognized campus organization appears on the official Caltech Institute Calendar and events system.

Parking is free anywhere on the Caltech campus after 5 p.m. Additional parking options include street parking on the west side of Holliston Avenue, the parking structure north of the Student Services Center, or the back lot behind buildings on the west side of Holliston.

Caltech Tai Chi Club will run on Monday and Friday at 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Hameetman Center, 220 Multipurpose Room, Caltech campus, Pasadena. For more information, email schen@caltech.edu or visit https://dotaichi.caltech.edu/.
