One of our favorite things about Cheeseburger Week is the chance to visit with some old favorites that we might not get to over the course of a long, busy year.
One of the many of those is Twohey’s. We’ve been covering them since they were an Alhambra institution, and we fervently followed their subsequent move to the Pasadena area, and, as soon as we were able, we came to visit.
That was some years ago, and we’ve been pals ever since.
As manager Bill Hamal reminded us earlier this week ,”We’ve been participating in Cheeseburger Week for as long as I can remember, even when we were in Alhambra, and we’ve always done either the California Burger or the Blues Burger.
“But this last year and this year,” he noted, “The California Burger is what everyone asks for.”
And because it’s Cheeseburger week, they’re offering their onion ring combo with it at no additional charge. That’s a great big pile of french fries with their famous gigantic onion rings.
It’s a lot to eat, hamburger lovers, so schedule an early afternoon nap, because, you know…
The Twohey’s California Burger is a half pound beef patty with avocado, bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, avocado, caramelized onion, mozzarella cheese, and Chipotle aioli sauce.
Whew. Just reading that made you hungry, right?
It’s a hefty burger that you’re gonna need to slice in half before you attack it, but it’s filled with so much good everything, that each bite will be wondrous.
We had to take half of ours home once we were reminded that Twohey’s also makes an epic, hot dark fudge sundae. We had to sit for a few minutes before we were ready for it, but hey, it’s been a year. We didn’t rest that long.
The sundae is as memorable as the burger, in its own way. It’s just vanilla ice cream, that dark hot fudge, nuts and whipped cream with a cherry, but assembled just right, it’s a symphony in a tall serving glass.
California Burger. Hot Fudge Sundae. Whoa. Just skip dinner, and be glad Cheeseburger Week only shows up once a year.
