City’s ‘Herstory’ Virtual Event Will Address Barriers for Women in the Workforce

Published on Mar 1, 2022

The City of Pasadena’s Commission on the Status of Women is hosting a virtual event on  International Women’s Day, Tuesday, March 8, 5:30 to 7 p.m., called “Herstory 2022: Addressing Barriers for Women in the Workforce.”

This free event will bring together community leaders from the public and private sector to discuss challenges experienced by working women, including those that intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Beverley Morgan-Sandoz, Commission Chair, will host the discussion, which will feature welcoming remarks by Lola Osborne, Acting Director of Pasadena’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, followed by a panel discussion facilitated by City Councilmember Jessica Rivas.

On the panel will be Kimberly Kenny, Associate Vice-President of Institutional Advancement at Mount Saint Mary’s University; Valerie Mendoza, Executive Director of Human Resources and Payroll at Rusnak Auto Group; and Dr. Kimlin Ashing, Associate Cancer Center Director for Community Outreach at City of Hope, and Professor at City of Hope’s Beckman Research Institute.

Panelists will discuss key findings from the 2021 Report on the Status of Women in Pasadena, prepared by the Mount Saint Mary’s Center for the Advancement of Women. Among the findings are that more Pasadena women are participating in the workforce, that there’s a rise in the number of Pasadena women who have obtained four-year college degrees, and that there’s an increase in racial diversity among Pasadena women.

After Herstory 2022, the Commission on the Status of Women will host a Women’s Wellness event on Saturday, March 12, 10 to 11 a.m. at Memorial Park. The event will feature yoga for all ages and children’s activities. The Pasadena Public Health Department will provide wellness information.

On Monday, Feb. 28, the Pasadena City Council is expected to issue a proclamation recognizing March as Women’s History Month. The meeting begins at 4 p.m. and is accessible through www.cityofpasadena.net/media.
