Film enthusiasts will experience Ingmar Bergman’s acclaimed “Autumn Sonata” as the Swedish master intended—projected from a rare 35mm print at the Norton Simon Museum on Friday, Sept. 26.

The 1978 psychological drama, rated PG and winner of the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film in 1979, screens as part of the museum’s Anniversary Classics series, showcasing landmark films in restored formats. This screening also belongs to the “Film Series: Autumn: Season of Change.”

Doors open at 4:30 p.m. for the 5 p.m. screening of the 95-minute film, followed by a curator-led discussion. A museum curator will moderate the post-screening discussion, focusing on thematic analysis and audience engagement.

The event demonstrates the museum’s commitment to preserving cinema’s original visual and sonic qualities through the 35 mm Janus Films print. Admission is free with museum entry.

The Norton Simon Museum provides complimentary coat check and operates a café until 5 p.m. The theater and restrooms are wheelchair accessible, with street parking and paid lots available within one block.

Museum staff recommend arriving early for optimal center seating, bringing a light jacket for comfort, and exploring the museum’s autumn exhibition before the screening begins.

“Autumn Sonata” will run on Friday, Sept. 26, at 5 p.m. (doors open 4:30 p.m.). Norton Simon Museum, 411 W. Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena.
