Visitors to The Huntington will have the chance to experience hands-on ceramic art during a two-session workshop launching this month. The workshop, titled “Ceramics Workshop: Clay in the Garden,” opens a direct pathway between the institution’s world-renowned exhibitions and the creative process itself, inviting participants to build vessels inspired by Edmund de Waal’s meditation on objects, culture, and belonging.

Artist and Loyola Marymount University lecturer Jenna Bonistalli will guide the sessions. Inside Steven’s Classroom at the Education and Visitor Center, participants will learn to build, detail, and glaze hand-built ceramic vessels using stoneware and porcelain while incorporating natural materials to embellish their pieces. The class welcomes all skill levels with no previous experience required and is recommended for participants aged 13 and older, with those under 18 required to be accompanied by an adult.

All supplies and materials are included in the registration fee. The two-week gap between sessions accommodates the firing process; participants will return approximately two weeks after the second class to collect their finished, glazed vessels.

The workshop unfolds within the yearlong run of “the eight directions of the wind: Edmund de Waal at The Huntington,” which opened October 18 and continues through October 26, 2026. De Waal, an internationally acclaimed contemporary artist known for large-scale porcelain installations, created three site-specific installations for the exhibition across The Huntington’s iconic spaces.

Speaking about the exhibition, de Waal reflected: “This exhibition is a meditation on belonging and the stories that objects carry. Porcelain, to me, is a way to speak across cultures and time.”

Registration includes admission to The Huntington. Participants must bring registration confirmation and check in with Education staff at Admission window #10 beginning at 9:30 a.m. on workshop days.

Ceramics Workshop: Clay in the Garden will run on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens, Steven’s Classroom, Education and Visitor Center, 1151 Oxford Road, San Marino, California.
