When Mariana and John Gomez, two Polytechnic School students, founded Club Mudd, they envisioned something transformative: bringing the joy of working with clay to Pasadena children who might never otherwise get the chance.

This December, their vision comes to life at the Pasadena Public Library’s La Pintoresca Branch, where kids ages six through twelve can explore ceramics through a free, three-session workshop. “Kids age six through twelve are invited to get messy and learn how to sculpt with clay!” the library announced. Over three visits, young artists will move through the entire ceramic process, shaping their ideas in clay during the first session, adding color and personality through painting and glazing in the second, then returning for the third session after teen volunteers have fired their pieces in a kiln.

According to library records, “Every child gets to use a block of clay, tools and various glaze paints. The creations are then fired in the kiln and returned to them.”

Participants must commit to all three sessions to see their work through from conception to completion. “Volunteers from the high school are kind and encouraging to all the kids,” according to library records. Noah Posin, a Polytechnic School student, exemplifies the leadership cohort keeping Club Mudd running. As The Paw Print, Polytechnic’s student newspaper, notes, “Club Mudd, which holds pottery workshops for students in Pasadena, help(s) bring the arts to those wanting to explore their creative side.”

The workshop is free. Space is limited due to kiln capacity and volunteer availability.

Club Mudd Ceramics for Kids will run on Thursday, Dec. 4, at 4 p.m. La Pintoresca Branch Library, 1355 N. Raymond Ave., in Pasadena. For more information, call (626) 744-7268 or visit https://www.cityofpasadena.net/library/?trumbaEmbed=view%3Devent%26eventid%3D192353377.
