That year became a turning point for 809 Fight 4 Awareness, a nonprofit in Pasadena determined to change the conversation around mental health in emergency services. Now they’re bringing that message to the community through laughter.
On Friday, December 12, the organization hosts “Shift Happens,” a comedy fundraiser at the Ice House Comedy Club featuring five accomplished stand-up comedians.
According to Maggie Hernandez, the organization’s communications director, “First responders tend to use humor as a coping skill, so hosting a comedy show that brought first responders together so we could all laugh and share space with each other felt like a natural choice.”
An inaugural comedy fundraiser on December 20, 2024, featuring Chris Estrada, proved successful enough to make December 12 the “2nd Annual First Responder Comedy Fundraiser.”
Between 2015 and 2017, the National Violent Death Reporting System documented 676 first responder suicides. From 2018 through 2025, 1,405 first responders have been reported to have committed suicide. A nationwide survey found 85 percent of first responders report mental health symptoms, with one-third carrying clinical diagnoses of depression or PTSD.
Of 18,000 U.S. law enforcement agencies, only three to five percent have suicide prevention training programs.
Shift Happens will run on Friday, December 12, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. The Ice House Comedy Club – Legendary Room, 24 N Mentor Ave, Pasadena, California. For more information, call (626) 414-2386 or visit https://www.showclix.com/event/shift-happens-12-12-25-730pm.
