Free performances of beloved show ask only for food pantry donations in return

When the curtain rises on “Singin’ in the Rain” at First United Methodist Church in Pasadena this Thursday, audiences will experience something increasingly rare: a completely free community theater production that asks for nothing more than a can of tuna in return.

The church’s summer musical runs four consecutive nights from July 23 through July 26, with all performances beginning at 7 p.m. “Performances are July 23 to 26 at 7 p.m. and are free to attend,” according to the church’s official event announcement.

While admission costs nothing, the production encourages community support.

“Guests are encouraged to bring canned tuna or peanut butter for Friends In Deed’s Food Pantry,” the church notes, turning each evening of entertainment into an opportunity for charitable giving.

For those wanting a full evening experience, pre-performance dinners are available on July 23, 25 and 26, starting at 5 p.m.

The meals cost $20 per adult and $12 per child under 11.

“Singin’ in the Rain” will run on Wednesday, July 23 through Saturday, July 26 at 7 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 500 E. Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena. For more information, call (626) 796-0157 or visit https://fumcpasadena.org/summer-musical. Tickets: Free.
