A Caltech outreach program is turning the night sky into a live classroom for middle and high school students. On Friday, February 20, Caltech astrophysics graduate student Sam Rose will lead “Science Journey – Cosmic Fireworks: How Astronomers Explore the Changing Sky,” a free, in-person STEM field trip at Beckman Auditorium in Pasadena.

The hourlong program invites “educators and parents” to bring students to campus and “learn how humans have studied the cosmos throughout history, and how advanced cameras and telescopes at today’s observatories are shedding new light on stars and other objects in the night sky in this presentation by Caltech astrophysics graduate student Sam Rose.” The talk is part of Caltech’s Science Journeys series, which features graduate students and postdoctoral scholars presenting scientific topics designed “especially for middle and high school students” and providing “supplemental resources” for classroom use.

Programs in the series are free through the generosity of the Friends of Beckman Auditorium, which supports K–12 educational outreach and public science events.

Science Journey – Cosmic Fireworks: How Astronomers Explore the Changing Sky will run on Friday, February 20, at 10 a.m. at Beckman Auditorium in Pasadena.
