Participants will observe birds, squirrels, coyotes and other animals that call the approximately 60-acre cemetery home, identify flowers and plants, and learn about locally famous residents such as science fiction author Octavia Butler, Nobel laureate physicist Richard Feynman, seismologist Charles Richter, Superman actor George Reeves and Black Panther leader Eldridge Cleaver.
Pasadena Humane describes the walk as an opportunity to understand the ecological importance of the cemetery and to see how urban wildlife thrives in unexpected places.
The organization notes it is one of only two animal shelters in Southern California licensed to rehabilitate wildlife and frames the program as part of its broader mission to help communities “respectfully coexist with wildlife.”
The walk also unfolds against the backdrop of Mountain View’s resilience during a January wildfire that threatened the area, when flames approached the grounds and staff worked to protect human remains and facilities.
Despite the threat, the cemetery sustained only minimal damage, losing a few maintenance buildings.
Cemetery Wildlife Walk will run on Sunday, February 15 at 6:30 a.m. at Mountain View Cemetery, 2400 N. Fair Oaks Ave., in Altadena. Mountain View Cemetery, 2400 N. Fair Oaks Ave., Altadena.
