Descanso Gardens will showcase its storied rose cultivation history during a two-day Rose-stravaganza event this weekend, offering visitors free activities, live music and educational displays about the beloved flowers.

The event runs Saturday, June 21, and Sunday, June 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the 1418 Descanso Drive location in La Canada Flintridge. All activities are included with regular garden admission.

Descanso Gardens has played a pivotal role in cultivating spectacular and beloved roses over the years. The weekend celebration aims to educate visitors about flower breeding techniques and the specific history of roses at Descanso.

Both days will feature pop-up displays explaining rose cultivation history, common characteristics of the flowers, their surprising botanical relatives and interesting aspects of Descanso’s Rose Garden. Hands-on activities will take place in the Rose Garden Pavilion and tent from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Live music will enhance the garden atmosphere each day. Philip Graulty will perform guitar music in the gazebo Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon, while harpist Tina Lenert will provide Sunday’s musical entertainment during the same time slot.

Saturday’s schedule includes a nursery tour with Frank Obregon from 1 to 2:30 p.m., though advance registration was required and the tour is now sold out. Sunday features a “Walk and Talk” session with Autumn Ayers from 2 to 3 p.m.

The educational displays will cover floral breeding processes and demonstrate how plants are developed, providing insight into the scientific aspects of rose cultivation alongside the garden’s historical significance.

Admission to Descanso Gardens is $15 for adults, $11 for seniors 65 and older and students with identification, and $5 for children ages 5-12. Children 4 and under enter free.
