Join the Pasadena Public Library and Donzaleigh Abernathy, an American actress, author, and civil rights activist, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, as she discusses her book, “Partners to History: Martin Luther King, Jr., Ralph David Abernathy, and the Civil Rights Movement.”
The book is both a testament and a tribute to the courage, strength and endurance of King, Abernathy, her father, and others involved in the civil rights movement.
Her mother, Juanita Jones Abernathy, was also famous for being actively involved in the creation and strategies of the civil rights movement, as well as in present-day civil and human rights causes until her death in 2019.
As a child, Abernathy joined her parents and witnessed firsthand many significant events of the movement. Her family was very close to the King family, with the Abernathy and King children attending school and performing extracurricular activities together, as well as sharing Sunday dinners, vacations and various holidays.
As Abernathy would later relate, children from both families would hold performances for their parents on these occasions, with Yolanda King, one of King’s daughters, acting as director, and King himself filming the performances. That’s when she really “started acting,” Abernathy has stated.
