El Portal’s annual tequila and mezcal tasting takes over the restaurant’s courtyard on Thursday evening, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at 695 E. Green St. Tickets are $55.

The evening pairs the pours with music, raffles and bocadillos. Eat something.

The tasting started when wine tastings dominated the local scene, and it has added producers and varieties over the years.

“We are the ones who started the tequila tasting in Pasadena,” said Abel Ramirez, the restaurant’s owner.

El Portal has used safety measures at the tasting including wristbands for designated drivers and controlled serving sizes. Line up a ride home before the first pour, and take the wristband if you are the one driving.

The event is ticketed and the purchase runs through the restaurant’s booking page. Buy ahead.

Parking is on-site. El Portal is in Arcade Lane on Green Street in downtown Pasadena.

The tasting is not the restaurant’s only annual date on the calendar. El Portal also hosts a Mexican Independence Day event and a Christmas gathering featuring opera singers from Latino Opera in Los Angeles.
