PCC Galleries presents Atlantican Opulencscapes Part II in the Boone Family Gallery. This exhibition is the first part of three simultaneous exhibitions of Bey’s work in the Los Angeles area this spring. The other half of Atlantican Opulencscapes will be at Glendale Community College Art Gallery, and the third exhibition "I Know All About What You Want to Know All About" will be an exhibition of new work at Vielmetter Los Angles. This coordinated group of exhibitions presents the work that Bey made during her recent sabbatical and aims to make connections between different bodies of work and to highlight her as one of Los Angeles most significant young artists. April Bey was born in Nassau Bahamas and now resides and works in Los Angeles, CA as a visual artist and tenured professor at Glendale Community College. Bey’s interdisciplinary artwork is an introspective and social critique of American and Bahamian culture, feminism, generational theory, social media, AfroFuturism, AfroSurrealism, post-colonialism and constructs of race within supremacist systems. For years, Bey has focused her work on exploring the fictional society of Atlantica, a speculative AfroFuturist world that extrapolates cultural ideas of a liberated space-faring civilization rooted in Caribbean culture. First conceived when she was a child (though she named it later), Atlantica was used by Bey’s father to explain Earth’s oppressive systems. Inspired by the science fiction they both loved, he told Bey that they were aliens from outer space, which gave them distance from which to observe Earth’s problems. In doing so, they created an imagined home built from resistance—and full of possibility—that was not always available in her every day. Atlantican Opulencscapes is an immersive installation of recent work developed on a year sabbatical by multidisciplinary artist April Bey. The exhibition will center on the exhibition of new paintings and textile works that expand on an ongoing project taps into Black Americans’ historical embrace of space travel and extraterrestrial visioning - a cultural movement dating back to the late 1960s and later termed Afrofuturism. Through this Afrofuturist lens, Bey reflects on subjects such as queerness, feminism, and internet culture in vibrant tableaux that combine plants, video, music, photography, and oversized mixed-media paintings, prints, and textiles.  On View, March 4 - May 4, 2024.
