David Vartanyan, Hubble Einstein Fellow at Carnegie Science Observatories, will present a lecture on the current understanding of supernovae and the rapid advancement of observational capabilities. Humanity is composed of the residue of nuclear reactions forged in the furnaces of massive stars. Yet for decades, astrophysical models struggled to explain how such stars explode as supernovae, distributing this vital ejecta throughout the universe. In his talk, Vartanyan will explore the recent paradigm shift that has transformed scientific understanding of supernovae and explain how he and other theorists are increasingly contributing to the rapid evolution of observational techniques. Program 6:30 p.m. – Doors open 7:00 p.m. – Brief musical performance 7:30 p.m. – Lecture begins About the Speaker - David Vartanyan is a Hubble Einstein Fellow at Carnegie Science Observatories. He earned his undergraduate degree at Caltech and completed his PhD at Princeton University. He then conducted research jointly at U.C. Berkeley and the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory before returning to his Southern California roots to join Carnegie Science Observatories.
