In the spirit of Earth Day (coming April 22), Arlington Garden in Pasadena and LA Nature For All are leading a socially-distanced in-person tour of the community-run garden, a three-acre garden on Caltrans-owned land along Arlington Street abd South Pasadena Avenue south of Huntington Hospital.
The Garden is a treasure, and an escape..
This free guided tour, “Nature Relations: Socially-Distant tour through Arlington Garden,” will be one-hour each on Tuesday, April 6, with slots available from 12 noon to 4 p.m. The tour will allow you an opportunity to learn about different climate-specific native plants, regenerative planting practices, and how plants benefit people’s physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing.
With your registration, you will receive a string bag with a limited-edition nature journal, art supplies, and other supplies.
Through the tour and the guided prompts in the nature journal, you will be asked to imagine and express the nature that you wish to see in Pasadena, and called to participate in ongoing city projects that help make the city more green, sustainable, and climate-resilient.
After completing the nature journals, you can use your work to enter Arlington Garden’s Sweet 16 Art Competition. The competition will give you a chance to have your work turned into an official tote bag sold at the Arlington Garden library.
Proceeds from bag sales will go towards funding education at the garden itself.
Arlington Garden is located on the site of a former staging ground for the 710 freeway. The freeway was halted due to community opposition, but the denuded, compacted lot remained empty until the birth of the garden in 2005.
The garden is not only friendly to people and pets, but also exists as a refuge for Pasadena’s native fauna. Birds, bees and butterflies are particularly abundant and can be seen throughout the year.
Arlington Garden, located at 275 Arlington Drive, has been developed by a collaboration between the Arlington Garden nonprofit, the City of Pasadena, Pasadena Department of Public Works, and Pasadena Water and Power, with help from Pasadena Beautiful Foundation and the Mediterranean Garden Society.
Continued support comes from garden clubs, local businesses, nurseries, neighbors and friends.
