Ramona Convent Secondary School (RCSS) in association with ACT Now Group presents “Radium Girls” written by D.W. Gregory, directed by Zoe Bright and produced by Anisa Hamdan, on Friday, Oct. 21, starting at 7 p.m., at the Fremont Centre Theatre in South Pasadena.
Originally produced by Playwright Theatre of New Jersey and developed with a commissioning grant from The Ensemble Theatre/Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Science and Technology Project, “Radium Girls” is a play in two acts written by D. W. Gregory with warmth and humor.
This drama is a fast-moving, highly theatrical ensemble piece. In 1926, radium was a miracle cure discovered by Marie Curie in the treatment of cancer. It was also used to paint the dials of luminous watches which was the latest rage. Hundreds of young girls, starting at age 16 until their mid 20’s, worked daily painting the dial faces with radium paint having no idea that it was poisonous.
Inspired by a true story, “Radium Girls” traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court to get compensation for all the girls, to help pay for mounting medical bills and to bring awareness that the same element that shrinks tumors, is also responsible for the terrifying rash of illnesses among the workers at the U.S. Radium Corporation.
The play “Radium Girls” has been called a powerful and engrossing drama by critics.
