Fifty Years to Dismantle Democracy: Author Traces Supreme Court’s Systematic Attack on Voting Rights

Investigative reporter David Daley presents evidence of Chief Justice John Roberts' calculated campaign to reshape American elections through the courts

In 1981, a Harvard Law School graduate joined the Reagan Justice Department with a mission that would span decades: dismantling the Voting Rights Act. His name was John Roberts.

More than thirty years later, as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Roberts achieved that goal with the 2013 Shelby County v. Holder decision—a 5-4 ruling that struck down Section 4(b) of the Voting Rights Act.

Investigative reporter David Daley will discuss his book “Antidemocratic: Inside the Far Right’s 50-Year Plot to Control American Elections” at Vroman’s Bookstore on Thursday, November 6 at 7 p.m.

The 432-page book, published by Mariner Books in August 2024, traces how conservative strategists achieved policy goals opposed by most Americans by capturing the courts rather than winning elections.

“Chilling and convincing, Antidemocratic is a must-read,” said historian Heather Cox Richardson.

This is Daley’s third book on democracy threats. His 2016 bestseller “Ratf**ked” exposed Republican gerrymandering and inspired reform efforts nationwide.

The event takes place in Pasadena. Tickets are free with RSVP. For information, call (626) 449-5320.
