A leading historian will explore Hollywood’s storied legacy and its uncertain future as America’s filmmaking capital in a special presentation next month.
Marc Wanamaker, who has worked in film production, exhibition and research for several decades, will deliver the lecture titled “The Hollywood Behind the Lens” at the Shakespeare Club of Pasadena.
Wanamaker owns Bison Archives, whose photographic collection specializes in the history of Los Angeles and the American motion picture and television industries.
The presentation will draw from Wanamaker’s vast archive, which has existed for 50 years in Hollywood’s epicenter, housing over 70,000 photographs, production paperwork and manuscripts documenting the industry’s history.
Many of Hollywood’s historic film sets, props, locations and even the studios themselves have vanished or been transformed beyond recognition. With Bison Archives, which he established in 1971, Wanamaker brings significant credentials as a published historian, lecturer and teacher, holding degrees in theater arts, music and history, and served in administrative roles with American Film Institute.
His experience includes teaching film history at UCLA Extension for five years, and his extensive background spans multiple facets of film production, exhibition and historical research over several decades.
The presentation on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2025, opens at 7 p.m. Advance reservation is required at the Shakespeare Club of Pasadena, at 171 South Grand Ave. General admission tickets are $18, with Pasadena Museum of History and Shakespeare Club member tickets at $13.
