In a pandemic year which never really seems to quite end, Chuan Spas at The Langham Hotels and Resorts may hold the key to re-balancing your inner and outer self, with its first Global Wellness Week, which is currently running through August 8.

Complimentary to registered guests, and available to customers booking a spa treatment, the wide range of events and activities is meticulously planned to cater to all different fitness levels, ages, and wellness preferences, said Leslie Marks, e-commerce manager at The Langham Huntington, Pasadena.

As Marks explained Monday,  “Global Wellness Week is an initiative that Langham Hotels are doing worldwide. So Chuan Spas at Langhams around the world are participating in this experience.”

As Marks continued, “It’s very timely, especially with the Olympics happening right now, that we promote mental health and physical health. So Langham Hotels and Chuan Spa assembled this calendar of activities to participate in and promote around the world.”

The Langham will feature  Tai-Chi on Tuesday, with a “Find Your Elements” experience on Wednesday.

Said Marks, “This is something that any guest of Chuan Spa is invited to participate in. So when you book a treatment and you come to the spa, the ‘Find Your Element’ experience is something that you’ll always do before your service.”

Based on a questionnaire that guests fill out, they are then given an element, said Marks. The elements could be wood or metal or water, or similar, she explained.

“And then your treatment is customized around that element,” said Marks. “We have different massage oils and even an Elemental Tea that will be offered that are specific to that element.”

On Thursday, Chuan will feature yoga, said Marks, and Friday is a neck, back and shoulders massage.

As Marks explained, “We’re going to be offering those in our VIP suite, a beautiful room for these 15-minute mini-treatments.”

Saturday is self-guided body stretching, with visuals and instructions around the room for a range of different types of stretching.

Sunday takes guests on a self-guided walk through the beautiful neighborhood which surrounds The Langham property via a walking map. The hotel will distribute walking maps for recommended routes around the neighborhood.

Taking care of ourselves becomes even more important as the world re-emerges, said Amy Chan, assistant director of spa, Langham Hospitality Group.

“We want to encourage people to be active, stay healthy and also inspire them to spend more time taking care of themselves, especially as we cope with the COVID-19 pandemic.”

As Chan explained, “Chuan Spa takes a holistic approach to wellness, embracing the centuries-old healing philosophies of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and we want to educate and impart the benefits of TCM to all our guests.”

Drawing on the powers of the five elements – wood, fire, earth, metal, and water, Chuan Spa’s treatments are based on Chinese medicine plants and principles, combined with aromatherapy.

In addition to free consultations, other TCM treatments featured in Chuan Spa’s Global Wellness week include:

  • Cupping, a therapy used in TCM to remove stagnation and stimulate the flow of ‘qi’. Qi is the flow of vital energy circulating through the body. The therapy involves placing cups on the skin to create suction and facilitate the flow of ‘qi’ in the body. The suction may facilitate healing with blood flow.
  • Gua sha, a natural, alternative therapy that involves scraping your skin with a massage tool to improve your circulation.
  • Meridian line rebalancing, in which acupressure techniques are used to realign the body.

Guests may also create their own aroma sachets and fragrances, using Chuan’s signature “five elements” essential oils—a custom blend of aroma exclusively created in consultation with professionals in Chinese medicine and by Christophe Laudamiel, a Master Perfumer.

Chuan Spa essential oils have been developed based on the fact that natural scents interact significantly with the body, and thus have an impact on the different dimensions of our mental states.

Other wellness activities may include aroma flower baths, five elements tea tasting, shots of multi- vitamins infused with healthy boosters, massages, meditation, mindfulness and nutrition talks by experts to provide guidance on healthy living.

Selected sessions from the Global Wellness week will also be live streamed on social media platforms (Facebook and WeChat), said Marks.
