The Altadena Library District will host a free “Holiday Blues Older Adult Workshop” on Thursday, November 6 at 10 a.m., designed to help older adults navigate seasonal sadness — a challenge intensified by the January Eaton Fire that destroyed nearly 60% of residential structures in Altadena.
“In this workshop, LA CO DMH promoter, Monique Juarez will explore, Holiday Blues. This is a seasonal workshop which discusses different strategies to combat the sadness or ‘the blues’ that often accompany the winter holiday season,” according to the library’s event description.
The one-hour workshop at Bob Lucas Memorial Library, 2659 Lincoln Avenue, is part of a broader wellness initiative. The Altadena Library District is partnering with local organizations to offer workshops, trainings, and other activities for all ages that promote community health and well-being in the aftermath of the Eaton Fire.
Monique Juarez, a Community Health Worker for LA County’s Department of Mental Health United Mental Health Promoters Program, will lead the session.
The United Mental Health Promoters Program has grown significantly since 2011. The program now includes over 100 LA County Department of Mental Health staff who “conduct outreach, assist with events, facilitate 90-minute workshops on 13 key topics in mental health, reducing stigma, and increasing access to care.”
“We want the library District to be a symbol of hope and recovery for our community,” said Nikki Winslow, District Director of the Altadena Library District.
