The Friends of the Pasadena Public Library hold their patio book sale Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside the Friends Bookstore at 1500 E. Villa St., between Hill and Allen avenues, east of the Jefferson Branch Library. Store books, CDs and DVDs are included in the sale, and store premiums are 50% off.
The proceeds are the point. Money from these sales funds programming across all 10 branches of the Pasadena Public Library system — the Summer Reading Club, One City One Story, and the observances the library builds each year around Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Latino Heritage Month, Asian American and Pacific Islander Month and Native American Heritage Month. The organization prioritizes projects that instill the excitement of discovery and the love of reading in patrons of all ages.
The Friends have been doing this since 1975 — five decades of underwriting programs the library’s own budget does not reach. The bookstore itself relocated to the vacant Jefferson Elementary School campus and has become the group’s base of operations, open Monday through Thursday and Saturday.
The store closed for two weeks after the Eaton Fire, not because it was in the burn area but because library staff were reassigned to fire-related work. When it reopened, it offered a 50% discount and a free book with every purchase to anyone who had lost a home, and free or deeply discounted books to teachers rebuilding classroom libraries.
Bring a bag. Or take one of theirs.
