Folk Duo Brings Laurel Canyon Vibes to Caltech

Pasadena Folk Music Society presents non-genre-specific musical partnership

When reviewer Helen Jones described the song “Mrs. Montgomery” from Hilary Tipps and Steve Obermiller’s debut album as something that “feels like it would fit very easily in a 1970s Laurel Canyon folk album,” she captured the timeless quality that has made the duo a standout in today’s crowded Americana scene.

The musical partnership will showcase their genre-defying sound at Caltech’s Beckman Institute Auditorium on Saturday, July 26, when the Pasadena Folk Music Society presents “A Folk Americana Music Night: Tipps and Obermiller.”

Tipps and Obermiller have crafted a deliberately non-genre-specific approach, blending folk, Americana, country, blues and pop elements to serve each song’s individual narrative needs rather than adhering to any single musical tradition.

Jones’s review of their debut album “Love (and Other Mysteries)” in Americana UK highlighted this versatility, particularly noting how “Mrs. Montgomery” evokes the organic, storytelling-driven folk renaissance of 1970s Laurel Canyon.

The Beckman Institute Auditorium doors open at 7:15 p.m. for the two-hour performance, with tickets ranging from $10 to $25.

A Folk Americana Music Night: Tipps and Obermiller will run on Saturday, July 26 at 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Beckman Institute Auditorium, 1200 East California Boulevard, in Pasadena.
