Thirty high school and college musicians from across the region will take the stage at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse on Sunday, June 7 at 3 p.m. for a free community concert showcasing the next generation of Southern California classical talent.
The program, “Young Soloists of Southern California,” is presented by the Olympia Philharmonic Society, a Southern California nonprofit founded in 1988 that focuses on classical music education and performance, including its annual Olympia Youth Orchestra program. The afternoon will feature works by Beethoven, Dvořák, Grieg, Schubert, Vivaldi and Wieniawski, drawn from the standard solo and chamber repertoire that defines a young classical musician’s developmental years.
Headlining the program is Jacob Sun, recently named the American String Teachers Association Los Angeles chapter Grand Prize Winner — a competition that has launched numerous Southern California string players into conservatory programs and professional careers. The featured soloist will perform alongside a roster of high school and college-aged players, several of whom are participants in Olympia’s own youth ensembles.
The Mission Playhouse — a 1927 Spanish Colonial Revival auditorium built to commemorate the founding of Mission San Gabriel — provides one of the region’s more atmospheric settings for live classical music, with a 1,400-seat sanctuary known for clear acoustics that suit chamber and solo repertoire particularly well. The playhouse approaches its centennial year in 2027.
Admission is free, with no reservations required. Audience members are encouraged to arrive early, as free community concerts at the Mission Playhouse frequently draw capacity crowds. Family attendance is welcomed and there are no age restrictions on the performance.
