A registered nurse from Huntington Health will set up at the Bob Lucas Memorial Library and Literacy Center in West Altadena on Tuesday morning, offering free health counseling and screenings on a no-appointment basis. The two-hour drop-in session is part of an outreach program by the regional health system, an affiliate of Cedars-Sinai.
The Bob Lucas branch reopened in August after a 16-month renovation that expanded the building by 1,000 square feet, adding about 50% more space, a new children’s area, and a literacy center with classroom and
tutoring rooms. The branch — named for Robert “Bob” Lucas, the Altadena resident who advocated for a west-side library in 1971 — has been the Altadena Library District’s primary location since the Main Library on East Mariposa Street closed for renovation on February 1.
The branch sits on Lincoln Avenue near Ventura Street, in a part of Altadena that absorbed significant residential damage in the January 2025 Eaton Fire. Neighborhood health resources have been a priority for community organizations during the recovery, and library partnerships with health providers have multiplied across the San Gabriel Valley over the past year.
No appointments are needed for the screenings. The library, which is part of the Altadena Library District, is open Tuesdays 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Free health counseling and screenings will run on Tuesday, May 12 from 10 a.m. to noon. Bob Lucas Memorial Library and Literacy Center, 2659 N. Lincoln Avenue, Altadena. For more information, call (626) 798-0833. Admission is free. No appointment required
