Free Legal Research Assistance Event

Weekly sessions offer access to premium legal databases while historic Central Library undergoes earthquake repairs

LA Law Library specialists are bridging a critical resource gap with weekly sessions at Hastings Branch Library, offering free access to premium legal databases and research guidance that typically costs hundreds of dollars.

The program operates every Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Hastings Branch Library, 3325 E. Orange Grove Blvd., where specialists help visitors navigate legal questions or prepare for court proceedings.

“LA Law Library staff visit on Wednesdays 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. to offer assistance in finding information that will help answer legal questions, getting started on learning about the law or going to court,” according to the LA Law Library’s service description.

Through the partnership with Pasadena Public Library, patrons receive complimentary access to Westlaw, CEB OnLaw, Hein Online, Legal Information Reference Center, LegalTrac and Lexis+.

However, there are clear limitations. “Legal research specialists are not attorneys and cannot provide legal advice, help fill out forms, or interpret the law,” the library states.

The service has gained importance since Pasadena Central Library closed on May 3 due to seismic safety issues.

“This is devastating news for us all. Central Library is more than just a building; it’s where generations of families have grown up,” said Steve Mermell, city manager, when announcing the closure.

The city remains committed to reopening the landmark. “We are committed to reopening the doors of the Pasadena Central Library as a safe, historic and functional space for all,” according to a recent city statement.

“Legal Research Assistance with LA Law Library” will run on Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Hastings Branch Library, 3325 E. Orange Grove Blvd., in Pasadena.
