Older adults and their caregivers in the San Gabriel Valley can build resilience and connect with peers during a free mental health wellness event next Tuesday.
“Living the Inspired Life” will be held November 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring creative activities for older adults ages 55 and older. The Pasadena Public Library is hosting the event in partnership with Heritage Clinic’s United Mental Health Promoters program. All supplies will be provided.
The United Mental Health Promoters are community-based peer supporters who provide culturally adapted support and link individuals to community resources.
“LACDMH’s Promoters Program aims to reduce mental health stigma throughout Los Angeles County — particularly in historically underserved cultural and linguistic communities — by increasing awareness about mental health issues, removing barriers, and improving timely access to culturally and linguistically appropriate resources,” according to the LA County Department of Mental Health.
Originally launched in 2011 as the “Promotores de Salud Mental Program” targeting Spanish-speaking communities, the county Board of Supervisors approved expansion in 2020 to serve additional populations including Black/African Heritage, Asian Pacific Islander, American Indian/Alaska Native, Eastern European/Middle Eastern, LGBTQ+, and individuals with physical disabilities communities.
The Asian Youth Center operates the project, offering culturally competent information in Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Spanish, and English.
Heritage Clinic, founded in 1979, provides mental health services from its main office at 447 N. El Molino Avenue in Pasadena. The nonprofit serves adults age 55 and older throughout the San Gabriel Valley and surrounding areas.
Previous events have been held at the Lamanda Park Branch of the Pasadena Public Library, located at 140 South Altadena Drive, with organizers welcoming caregivers and walk-ins.
