Here’s the January Line Up of Free Virtual Events Hosted by Pasadena Senior Center

Published on Jan 1, 2021

The Pasadena Senior Center may be restricted to virtual events, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a full event calendar for January.

Join them for one of their many online events and lectures, as these are not restricted to members of the Pasadena Senior Center.

To start off the new year, Free Weight and Fitness Classes will return on Monday, January 4, 10 a.m. These classes continue on Wednesdays and Fridays, also 10 a.m., throughout the month.

Computer Lab will also be back Monday, January 4, at 2 p.m. This free event happens every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The Pasadena Senior Center will also allow you to take sample versions of their popular classes for free on Monday and Tuesday, January 4 and 5. In these Class Tasting sessions, the earliest of which begins at 9 a.m., you can meet the instructors, learn more about the courses that are open at PSC, and try them out online. Sample classes will last 30 minutes and anyone can choose from more than a dozen of the most popular offerings – from Acting Virtually to Zumba Gold.

To sign up for these sessions, just visit www.pasadenaseniorcenter.org/online-classes/virtual-class-tasting/3384-winter-session-class-tasting, click on the registration button for each class you want to try, and wait for an email with the Zoom link for that day’s Class Tasting session of your choice course. If you like any of these courses and would like to continue, then let the PSC know so they can include you in the regular classes.

For January, the Senior Center is also offering a host of other free online programming where both members and non-members, Pasadena residents or not, are welcome to participate in. These include Breathing Better with Asthma and COPD on Thursday, January 7, 10 a.m., where you can learn the differences between asthma and COPD, their causes, treatments and how to live as full a life as possible with these challenges; A Zoom Refresher also on Thursday, January 7, at 2 p.m., when Pete Matus, the Pasadena Senior Center’s online classes and events coordinator, Events Director Annie Laskey and board of directors member Lynn Mehl share tips for using Zoom and joining a Zoom session; and the Senior Center’s Food Distribution Program on Friday, January 8, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

The monthly food distribution ordinarily takes place the first Friday of every month but because of the holidays, this has been scheduled for the second Monday. Here, low-income adults 60 and above will receive one box of food and couples will receive two. Have your proof of income and California ID ready to show if you’re first-time recipients. Food packages are distributed at the parking lot between the Senior Center and the Metro Gold Line station.  It would ba advisable to bring a pull-behind personal cart since the boxes tend to be heavy.  To enroll in the program or for more information, call (626) 685-6732. Masks and social distancing are required at the event.

An Alzheimer’s Savvy Caregivers Support Group happens on Friday, January 8, 11 a.m. Here, you will learn basic knowledge and skills needed to care for your loved one with Alzheimer’s disease , share your experiences and get your questions answered.  The support group meets the second Friday of every month.

The monthly Cynthia Rosedale Memorial Sports Talk Series will kick off Monday, January 11, with this “Ask Pasadena Senior Games Athletes: Track and Field” panel discussion among Pasadena’s senior track and field athletes at 4 p.m. Each month, Pasadena Senior Games athletes from a variety of disciplines will discuss how to stay mentally and physically fit in sports and in life.

It was Cynthia Rosedale who first introduced the senior games to Pasadena in 1992.

Chair Yoga returns for the new year on Tuesday, January 12, at 10 a.m. Presented by Kathy Eastwood, Outreach Nurse at Huntington Hospital, this is where you can improve your balance, strength, flexibility and overall health through gentle yoga exercises while sitting in a chair or standing and using a chair for support.

For diabetics and those caring for diabetic family members, a Diabetes Support Group is scheduled for Wednesday, January 13, at 1 p.m. Join the Zoom event and learn about others’ experiences, share your own stories and learn how to cope with this disease. Kathy Eastwood from Huntington Hospital is hosting this group which meets the second Wednesday of every month.

For homeowners ages 62 and older, a Reverse Mortgages webinar on Zoom will happen on Thursday, January 14, at 10 a.m. You will learn from Joe Engle, president of LoanSmart Inc., about the difference between a traditional mortgage, where the homeowner makes payments to a lender, and a reverse mortgage, where the lender pays the homeowner, who relinquishes equity.

Another free event is a Mediterranean Diet Zoom webinar on Thursday, January 21, at 10 a.m., an opportunity to explore how the Mediterranean diet blends the basics of heart-healthy eating with the traditional flavors and cooking methods of the region. Learn how it works and how it can boost your overall health.
