The event invites members to “join us for an evening of connection and celebration! Enjoy drinks and light bites while socializing with fellow members. For those who love a good game, we’ll be playing dominoes and lotería in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month! It’s the perfect chance to unwind, connect, and enjoy a little friendly competition.”
The timing coincides with Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
The starting date marks independence for five Central American nations: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
Lotería, often called Mexican bingo, originated in Italy in the 15th century and arrived in Mexico in 1769.
Ricardo C. Montalvo, a history graduate, told The Mississippi Link: “Lotería came to us during colonial times, but it was not as we know it today. … However, we can say that, despite its European origin, lotería is considered Mexican to the point of becoming a Mexican symbol abroad.”
Dominoes holds particular significance in Caribbean countries including Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, embodying community values reflected in a traditional Puerto Rican phrase: “The best offensive strategy is to defend your partner.”
Founded in 1894 to “interest women in the study of all branches of literature, art and science and the advancement of women in every branch of culture,” The Ebell of Los Angeles adopted the motto: “I will find a way or make one — I serve.”
The organization’s Italian Renaissance–style building, designed by architect Sumner P. Hunt, opened in 1927.
