“Celebrate the joy and wonder of Studio Ghibli and the 35th anniversary of the film Kiki’s Delivery Service with a garden party in our outdoor patio,” the library announced in a statement. The event is open to all ages and does not require registration.
“Kiki’s Delivery Service,” directed by acclaimed filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, tells the story of a young witch who leaves home to begin her training. The coming-of-age tale has garnered widespread praise for its positive messages and lack of traditional antagonists.
Set in a fictional European city, the film blends fantasy elements with realistic depictions of everyday life. It follows Kiki as she starts a flying delivery service and faces challenges that test her confidence and abilities.
The movie’s themes of personal growth, independence, and the importance of friendship have resonated with audiences for over three decades. Critics have lauded its realistic portrayal of a young girl’s emotional journey and its strong female protagonist.
“Kiki’s Delivery Service” marked Studio Ghibli’s first major commercial success, attracting over 2.6 million viewers in Japan upon its release. The film has since become an anime classic, praised for its subtle approach to magic and its focus on everyday challenges.
The Pasadena Public Library’s event offers an opportunity for fans and newcomers alike to experience the magic of Studio Ghibli. The Hill Avenue Branch, located across from Pasadena City College and known for its Asian language collection, provides a fitting backdrop for this celebration of Japanese animation. The branch also offers various programs and services, including book groups and the Pasadena Grows seed-lending program.
For those with accessibility concerns, the library has made provisions. “For accessibility information and requests, contact (626) 744-7311 or CSC@cityofpasadena.net,” the announcement stated, adding that advance notice of at least 72 hours is recommended.
