Gillian Anderson’s Blanche DuBois Comes to Pasadena

National Theatre Live brings star-studded “Streetcar” to Boston Court

Gillian Anderson (“Sex Education”) stars as Blanche DuBois in National Theatre Live’s “A Streetcar Named Desire,” screening at Boston Court in Pasadena on Sunday, July 27 at 5 p.m.

Director Benedict Andrews’ acclaimed production features Vanessa Kirby (“The Crown”) as Stella and Ben Foster (“Lone Survivor”) as Stanley Kowalski. The Telegraph’s Dominic Cavendish called it “an absolute knock-out. Raw, emotional and deeply unsettling.”

Tennessee Williams’ masterpiece premiered on Broadway on December 3, 1947, and earned him the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1948. The play remains widely regarded by theatre historians as one of the most critically acclaimed American plays of the twentieth century.

“As Blanche’s fragile world crumbles, she turns to her sister Stella for solace – but her downward spiral brings her face to face with the brutal, unforgiving Stanley Kowalski,” according to National Theatre Live’s official synopsis.

National Theatre Live, launched in 2009, transmits productions to approximately 700 venues worldwide. Former National Theatre Artistic Director Sir Nicholas Hytner explained: “I grew up in Manchester in the 60s. If I had been able to see Olivier’s National Theatre at my local cinema, I would have gone all of the time.”

Boston Court in Pasadena opened in 2003 and is a two-time recipient of the American Theatre Wing’s National Theatre Company Award. The venue offers what one reviewer described as a “small, intimate theater that leans towards new and challenging works of art.”

The 180-minute screening includes free parking behind the theatre.

NT Live: “A Streetcar Named Desire” will run on Sunday, July 27 at 5 p.m. at Boston Court, 70 N. Mentor Ave., in Pasadena.
