The “Seed to Supper” program offers hands-on learning this Saturday, September 27, at Garden of Hope, as part of a comprehensive course that provides adults with the tools they need to “successfully grow a portion of their own food on a limited budget,” according to the Pasadena Public Library program description.
Master Gardener Dena Brummer, Food Justice Coordinator and Garden Manager at City of Hope since November 2021, leads the program. “I am an advocate for honest food, food justice and sustainability. Much of my work is centered around the simple idea that our food system should protect the environment and biodiversity, promote health and wellness, and provide quality jobs with dignity,” she says.
The program combines virtual learning with practical application.
Online sessions occur monthly on the second Saturday—September 13, October 11 and November 8—from 10 a.m. to noon via Zoom.
Participants apply their knowledge during hands-on garden work days: September 27, October 25 and November 22 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The curriculum covers vegetable gardening fundamentals including soil preparation, garden planning, planting, maintenance and harvest.
The program welcomes adults of all ages, including those 50 and older, emerging adults aged 18 to 24, teens and tweens. Participants register once for all sessions, including online classes and garden work days.
Seed to Supper: Learn How to Grow Your Own Food will run on Saturday, September 27, at 3 – 5 p.m. Garden of Hope, near the intersection of Buena Vista St. and Village Road across from FLASH, 2240 Buena Vista St., Duarte, CA 91010.
