The Pasadena Senior Center invites the community to experience a facility that has become a national model for purposeful senior engagement. As California’s first nationally accredited senior center, it achieved this distinction through the National Council on Aging’s National Institute of Senior Centers in March 1999, joining only approximately 300 accredited centers nationwide out of more than 11,000.

Founded in May 1960 as the first nonprofit senior center in Southern California, the center emerged from a revolutionary vision by Ed Bignell, Pasadena’s first full-time director of physical education and recreation, who believed older residents deserved recreational services comparable to those for children and teens. The founding drew 2,000 people in attendance.

Today, under Executive Director Akila Gibbs—as she has led the center since 2008—the facility continues challenging ageist stereotypes. Gibbs described being impressed by the frequent laughter, people engaged in serious conversation, activities including piano and pool playing, and tap dancing, noting the energy and joy made her want to be part of the center.

The guided tours offer direct observation of comprehensive programming, including art classes, dance lessons and computer labs, addressing contemporary concerns about social isolation linked to serious health outcomes.

The center has earned widespread recognition. U.S. Rep. Judy Chu honored the Pasadena Senior Center as Nonprofit of the Year on August 27, 2022. Gibbs received the Junior League of Pasadena’s 2016 Community Impact Award.

Guided tours of Pasadena Senior Center will run on Monday and Thursday at noon and 10 a.m., respectively. Pasadena Senior Center, 85 East Holly St. in Pasadena. For more call 626-795-4331 or visit https://www.pasadenaseniorcenter.org.
