Happy Music That Heals

STAFF REPORT
Published on May 6, 2021

The Salastina Music Society presents its Happy Hour No. 56 on Tuesday, May 11, with violinist Vijay Gupta, a passionate advocate for the vital role of music to heal, shape, and change the way we see ourselves and the world around us.

Happy Hour is on Zoom every Tuesday at 7 p.m., although the Salastina Music Society occasionally accommodates the time zones of special guests around the world. The event is BYOB – and in case you’re wondering what that is, it’s “bring your own bottle,” since you’ll be enjoying the concert in your own home or wherever you are at the time.

Hailed by The New Yorker as “a visionary violinist,” Gupta is considered one of the most radical thinkers in the unradical world of American classical music. He is an esteemed musician, speaker and thought leader, serving to create spaces of belonging, healing and wholeness through music.

Named a MacArthur Genius in 2018 for his work founding and leading Street Symphony, Vijay ultimately left his job in the first violin section of the LA Philharmonic to pursue his career as a solo and chamber musician, speaker, and arts advocate.

Founded in 2011, Street Symphony has presented over 700 free, powerful musical events and workshops to Los Angeles communities disenfranchised by homelessness, poverty, and incarceration. This year, Street Symphony celebrates a decade of shared stories, shared experiences, and amazing relationships. Visit www.streetsymphony.org to learn more about the nonprofit.

For Happy Hour, Salastina Music Society members get early access at 5:30 pm.
