Have Yourself A Stickler Little Storytime with Miss Marie and Mr. Steve

'Alternative Santa' who rivals Jack Skellington takes center stage at children's reading event
Published on Dec 7, 2024

In a departure from traditional Christmas tales, Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena presents Stickler, acclaimed children’s author Lane Smith’s stick-covered character, during “Have Yourself A Stickler Little Storytime.”

The morning reading on Wednesday, Dec. 11, will showcase Smith’s holiday picture book, “A Stickler Christmas,” where a character reminiscent of Jack Skellington distributes carefully selected twigs as holiday presents.

Much like Charlie Brown receiving rocks while trick-or-treating, Stickler joyfully presents twigs to his forest companions, joining holiday legends like Rudolph, Frosty, and the Grinch.

Smith, recipient of the Kate Greenaway Medal, two Caldecott Honors, and lifetime achievement awards from the Eric Carle Museum and Society of Illustrators, crafts a tale encouraging empathy and kindness.

The story follows Stickler’s thoughtful gift-giving, including specialized sticks for various woodland creatures: a Hop-Higher Stick for Rabbit, an Idea Stick for Crow, and an In-a-Pear-Tree Stick for Partridge.

When Doug-the-Fir expresses anxiety about being decorated, Stickler not only promises to find a solution with the perfect stick but ultimately decides to shine himself to help his shy friend.

The 45-minute event, starting at 11 a.m., will feature the bookstore’s Mr. Steve reading the story, while Miss Marie provides musical entertainment with singing and drumming activities.

Smith, who lives in Connecticut with his wife Molly Leach, has illustrated numerous works including “Penguin Problems,” “Giraffe Problems,” and “Cat Problems,” all written by Jory John.

The picture book builds upon Smith’s previous works featuring Stickler, including “Stickler Loves the World” and “A Gift for Nana,” where the character first appeared.

Children attending the free event at Vroman’s will participate in Stickler-themed coloring activities following the story reading.
