Pasadena’s Gamble House, a National Historic Landmark and premier example of American Arts and Crafts architecture, will welcome visitors for holiday tours on Saturday, December 28. The event offers guests the opportunity to experience the historic Pasadena residence at their own pace, with knowledgeable docents stationed in each room to answer questions about the decorated holiday interiors.
Built in 1908 and 1909 by renowned architectural firm Greene and Greene for David B. Gamble, son of Procter & Gamble Company co-founder James Gamble, the house stands as a testament to the Craftsman style. The property showcases distinctive features including large overhanging eaves, extensive use of wood and stone, and Japanese-inspired elements.
The self-guided tours will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with visitors permitted to enter anytime during these hours. Tickets are available both online in advance and at the Gamble House Bookstore on the day of the event.
Visitors must present either printed or digital tickets for entrance. Adult admission is $12, with discounted rates of $10 for seniors and students, $8 for children ages 13-18, and free entry for children 12 and under. Members must sign in to receive special discounted rates.
The house features unique architectural elements handcrafted by skilled artisans, including interlocking timbers and mortise and tenon joints. Interior highlights include interconnected rooms with built-in furniture, intricate woodwork, and leaded glass windows. The Greene brothers designed not only the house but also its furnishings and surrounding gardens, creating a harmonious total work of art. The property includes Japanese-inspired gardens and a courtyard with a reflecting pool.
The Gamble House served as a winter residence for David and Mary Gamble until their deaths in the 1920s. In 1966, the Gamble family gifted the property to the City of Pasadena in partnership with the University of Southern California School of Architecture, which continues to help preserve this architectural masterpiece.
The Gamble House is located at 4 Westmoreland Place in West Pasadena. For more information, visitors can contact the main office at (626) 793-3334 or the bookstore at (626) 449-4178.
