When Cindy Shea told her parents at age eight that she wanted to become one of the world’s best trumpet players, few could have imagined she’d lead the first all-female mariachi band to win two Grammy Awards.

Shea’s groundbreaking ensemble, Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea, will perform at Sierra Madre Playhouse on Saturday, August 9 at 11 a.m., in a sold-out showcase during their milestone 25th anniversary year.

The group made history in 2009 as the first all-female mariachi band to win a Grammy Award for “Canciones De Amor,” then repeated the feat in 2014 with “A Mi Manera.” They’ve earned eight Grammy nominations and three Latin Grammy nominations total.

Since 2003, Mariachi Divas has been the official all-female mariachi of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “I try to give our guests something they won’t see anywhere else. The Mariachi Divas are great performers,” said Stan Freese, Disney’s talent booking director.

The anniversary celebrations gained momentum with September’s release of their 20th album, “25 Aniversario,” featuring Grammy-nominated artist Becky G on “Bluetooth.”

“This song embodies the evolution of our sound, blending the rich tradition of mariachi with the infectious energy of cumbia and modern Latin music,” Shea said.

The performances carry special significance following Shea’s recovery from a life-threatening stroke in September 2022.

Mariachi Divas will run on Saturday, August 9 at 11 a.m. Sierra Madre Playhouse, 87 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre.
